With all the advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI (GenAI), semiconductor company MediaTek is optimistic about the prospects of significant growth across its businesses.
“AI is a huge topic in the industry right now,” said Finbarr Moynihan, VP of Corporate Marketing at MediaTek. “At MediaTek, we view generative AI as a fundamental technology shift, comparable to the development of the internet or the mobile phone.”
Moynihan described the current phase of AI development as the “installation phase,” where significant investments are being made in cloud infrastructure and device ecosystems. He predicts that within a few years, AI will reach a “turning point,” leading to widespread adoption and integration across various industries.
“Generative AI will drive significant growth for the semiconductor industry, impacting everything from mobile devices to automotive systems and IoT applications,” Moynihan stated.
In the mobile sector, which remains MediaTek’s largest business segment, the company continues to maintain a strong market position. In Southeast Asia, over 50% of smartphones are powered by MediaTek, a trend echoed in regions like India, the Middle East, and Africa. Even in competitive markets like North America and Europe, MediaTek holds over 40% of the Android market share.
“We’ve maintained a robust market share globally, even in challenging years like 2023,” Moynihan said. “As we look ahead to 2024, we see modest growth in the smartphone market, with continued demand for 5G devices and increasing integration of generative AI capabilities.”
Flagship Dimensity 9000 series
MediaTek’s flagship Dimensity 9000 series exemplifies this integration, supporting advanced AI functionalities, such as on-device large language models and image generation technologies, without requiring a cloud connection.
“By 2027, almost half of smartphones shipped globally will have generative AI capabilities,” Moynihan predicted.
Turning to the automotive sector, MediaTek is accelerating its efforts with strategic partnerships and innovative product lines. The company’s collaboration with Nvidia highlights its commitment to enhancing in-cabin experiences and connectivity. MediaTek’s Dimensity Auto Cockpit solutions provide sophisticated multimedia, driver assistance, and connectivity features, positioning the company at the forefront of automotive technology.
“AI is reshaping the in-vehicle user experience, from augmented reality displays to AI-powered assistants that offer natural language processing,” Moynihan said. “Our partnership with Nvidia allows us to deliver cutting-edge solutions for the automotive market.”
Internet of Things
In IoT or Internet of Things, MediaTek leverages its expertise in multimedia and connectivity to address a broad range of applications, from smart homes and industrial automation to EV charging stations. The company’s Helio family of processors supports diverse IoT needs, with a commitment to long-term supply and industry-standard software frameworks.
“Our Helio line offers a versatile range of products, ensuring we meet the needs of various IoT applications,” Moynihan said. “We’re also committed to supporting these products with longevity and robust software support.”
MediaTek’s strategic investments and innovations across AI, automotive, and IoT sectors position the company for continued growth. Moynihan expressed confidence in MediaTek’s future, emphasizing its readiness to capitalize on emerging trends and opportunities.
“With our strong market presence, advanced technologies, and strategic partnerships, we’re well-prepared to navigate the evolving landscape and drive significant growth in the coming years,” he said.
