Federal courts halt parts of Biden’s student loan repayment plan

(CNN) – The Biden White House’s student loan repayment plan is facing more legal challenges.

Lawsuits from Kansas and Missouri claim the Biden administration’s “Saving on a Valuable Education” plan overstepped its authority.

Eleven states – Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah – filed the first lawsuit in late March. Another group of seven states – Missouri, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, North Dakota, Ohio and Oklahoma – filed one soon after.

The plan lowers borrowers’ monthly payments.

A federal judge in each state approved partial preliminary injunctions on Monday.

That means two parts of the plan will be halted nationwide while the cases are litigated.

The SAVE program has canceled $5.5 billion in debt for more than 414,000 people.
